Initial ImpressionsI have only be using Genealogy Detective for a couple of days now, so this a quick review. I will write a more detailed review latter. The main thing Genealogy Detective offers is speed. It find anything that you couldn't get via Web search engines or via links on genealogy sites. For example the Surname Springboard which I run has links to thousands of websites with family trees on them, and the Genealogy Gateway has over a hundred thousand links to all kinds of genealogy information, and Cyndi's List has a thousands of links. However the problem with this is that search engines take time to do their searches and come up with lots of sites which do not have genealogy information and you have to look for site you are interested in, and it takes time to find good links on genealogy link sites. The advantage of Genealogy Detective is that someone has gathered the websites and classified them. You can access the information organized in various different ways, and since the information on the links are on your PC you can see them quickly instead of waiting on a search engine, and they are all links to genealogy information. So is Genealogy Detective required to find genealogy information? No, it is not. Can Genealogy Detective save time? Absolutely, especially if you are just starting do genealogy research on the Internet and have spent the time finding the links to genealogy information. Check back for a more comprehensive review later. To go to the "Genealogy Detective 2000" website and see what they claim it can do. |
